Will Kumar Sangakkara Play Last World Cup?

What can come as a major play to many Sri Lankan cricket fans is that latest revelation which states that legendary player Kumar Sangakkara can take retirement from all forms of cricket after the ICC World Cup 2015.

According to the report by the Daily Mirror, the Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman will be no more seen in the international cricket after the ICC World Cup which will begin from February 14 and will last till March 29. All the matches are scheduled in Australia and New Zealand.

According to sources, in a special meeting held with the national selectors the 37-year-old had revealed his decision to retire. However a national selector was quoted saying that no such meeting has taken place.

In March the veteran was quoted saying that he would retire from all international cricket forms after the World Cup 2015. He was quoted saying, “As far as ODI and Test cricket are concerned, it’s hard to give a timeframe. I am 36 years old now and will be 37 next year during the time of the World Cup. At the next World Cup, I will be 41 and I don’t hope that I will be playing then. So the 2015 World Cup will be my last. It’s a kind of natural progression.”

“For Test cricket; form, fitness and enjoyment factors must be there for you to continue. There is no denying I am in the twilight of my career.”

If the decision is correct then the ongoing series between England and Sri Lanka is the last international game which Sangakkara is playing. Also earlier this month Sangakkara was given rest for the last two ODIs against India. In these games new players were selected to play as the selectors want the best team for the coming World Cup.

Performance of Sangakkara in the recent matches clearly shows how important he is for the team in the coming World Cup tournament. With his score of 61 runs in just 86 balls he broke the record of South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis of 86 half-centuries in ODIs. Now only master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of him in the half century record.
